Women's Health

PathLogic recognizes that women have individual specific health needs. That’s why we offer an extensive library of tests directly related to women's health. The Women’s Health Division at PathLogic promotes innovative testing that will improve the health and well being of every woman through every stage of her life. PathLogic serves as a boutique-style lab specializing in women’s health issues, disease prevention diagnostics, and support, long after the diagnosis is rendered. The Women’s Health Division at PathLogic began in 2002. Since that time, PathLogic has added Thin Prep with Imaging, FNA services and clinic, and molecular testing to include HPV plus genotyping (PCR platform), CT/GC, HSV 1 & 2, cystic fibrosis, and thrombophilia. PathLogic serves clients throughout the state of California and has two operational labs in Northern California and Southern California.

Gynecological cytopathology

PathLogic utilizes the ThinPrep Pap Test®. The ThinPrep pap test ensures a representative transfer of cells from vial to slide, producing a well-visualized thin-layer slide, as well as reproducible results. The ThinPrep pap test is FDA-approved as “significantly more effective than the conventional pap smear.” PathLogic was the first pathology group in Sacramento to employ the Thin Prep Imaging system in 2005. The Imager scans every cell and cell cluster on a slide, highlighting “areas of interest” (cells with increased DNA content). These areas, comprising 22 fields of view (FOV) out of 120 FOV, are then presented to the cytotechnologists for review. The cytotechnologists focus their attention on the 22 FOV and if they detect any abnormalities, the entire slide is reviewed. 100% of slides are screened by both the Imager and a CA-licensed cytotechnologist to ensure a more accurate diagnosis. All abnormal slides are further reviewed by a pathologist. This increased accuracy reduces the false negative fraction rate by 39%. Our cytopathology team consists of three board-certified cytopathologists, Dr. Jonathan Musicant, Dr. Shirley Shen, and Dr. Meena Tandon, as well as experienced cytotechnologists.

Key benefits of ThinPrep Pap Test®

FDA approved as “significantly more effective than the conventional Pap test for the detection of squamous epithelial lesions” (abnormalities) FDA claims of increased in HSIL detection using ThinPrep versus conventional Pap FDA claims of increased likelihood of detecting glandular disease using ThinPrep versus conventional Pap (Glandular disease is a highly aggressive form of cervical cancer) Only FDA-approved test for HPV testing directly out of the vial Only FDA-approved test for Gonorrhea & Chlamydia testing directly out of the vial Key benefits of ThinPrep imaging Imager measures DNA content within the nucleus of each cell Every slide is analyzed by the imager and screened by a cytotechnologist Dual Review™ – benefits of computer reading – largest darkest nuclei (highest DNA content) are identified so cells can be more accurately assessed for abnormalities by cytotechnologists Imager provides increased sensitivity and specificity over manual screening of ThinPrep slides Imaging leads to a reduction in false negative fraction by 39% over manual screening of ThinPrep slides To learn more about Hologic/ThinPrep Pap Test with Imaging®, click here .

Gynecological pathology including SpiraBrush

PathLogic was the first laboratory in Northern California to provide clients with the SpiraBrush CXTM biopsy – a patented cervical biopsy instrument approved by the FDA in 2002 – as an alternative to the more invasive cervical punch biopsy. Our specially trained pathologists provide professional services relating to SpiraBrush CXTM biopsies. The SpiraBrush CXTM biopsy kit is provided to OB/GYN physicians to use the minimally-invasive SpiraBrush CXTM in lieu of the traditional more invasive cervical punch biopsy when an initial pap screen indicates the need for a more definitive cervical screening. This minimally-invasive technique reduces risk of hemorrhaging from cervical punch biopsies and is an attractive alternative for today’s OB/GYN practitioners.

Molecular diagnostics

At PathLogic, we recognize the countless advancements in the diagnosing of disease using Human DNA. These new testing methods allow pathologists and clinicians to use molecular genetics for early and accurate diagnoses of disease. Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) methodology is the most widely-used technology in molecular scientific research. This method provides convenience for both clinicians and patients with direct testing from the ThinPrep vial.
